Groupings are age dependent but semi-flexible. Sometimes we group advanced children into older classes and/or encourage children with a lack of art experience to begin in a younger class.
This is our introduction to art. The classes are fun and encouraging while developing the absolute basics:
Holding a pencil with control and pressure sensitivity
Using scissors to cut out simple shapes
Distinguish color: Primary Colors and how they make secondary colors
Understand basic shapes and how to draw them
Basic understanding of mediums: Acrylic Paint, Oil Pastel, Water Colour
How to control a paint brush and paint within the lines
Here we will develop a deeper understanding of the elements of art. Children will develop more confidence in their mark making, be able to assess risk and become more decisive in their creative decision making. Projects will span multiple lessons and require more consideration to complete.
Increase confidence with sketching and use of line
Learn to work with and into mistakes
Color mixing is taken a step further as we consider warm and coolness in an image
Distance, 3D and a deeper appreciation for perspective
Higher detail, and a clearer knowledge of what different mediums offer
Children develop their accuracy as we encourage them to persevere, erase and rework images
This new phase signifies the introduction of more complicated artistic considerations. Here we will challenge students to explore their work through the lens of art history, as they develop a sophisticated artistic vocabulary and enhance their technical ability. All the while keeping creative explorations as our highest priority. This project-based way of teaching will prepare students for their high school learning by teaching them how to think critically in conjunction with their growing technical ability.
Longer projects with preparatory sketches, and exercises
Deeper exploration of medium, and how to extend and complicate medium
How to use art to make meaning and express a feeling or thought
Drawing from real life, understanding the tools for drawing in perspective
